I volunteered with a grassroots organization called Indivisible in 2017. I helped create a large-scale survey to understand how communities used social media to band together to take political actions, organize protests, set up phone banks, etc. With the help of the Indivisible leadership in Washington, DC, I deployed an in-depth survey to over 300 local chapters. We were surprised by the completion rate and discovered that Facebook was the most dominant tool, and we learned that most groups were not that well-versed in using digital tools effectively. As a result, I created a handbook on using social media for political action and distributed it to all the chapters. I also helped the local San Francisco chapter with its website and branding.
As a side project, I created a LEGO tribute to the women’s march of January 2017 and wrapped it in a website designed with the general look and feel of the Indivisible brand. I created custom pink hats for many minifigs and reproduced signs used in the march.
